Our Vision

The vision of the Unitarian Universalist Church of Rockville is a strong, vibrant, and loving religious community actively engaged in nurturing spiritual freedom and working for social justice.

Some notes about Unitarian Universalism and our 7 guiding principles may be found on the visitors page.

Our Mission

The mission of the Unitarian Universalist Church of Rockville is to engage one another in a free and inclusive religious community that encourages lives of integrity, service and joy. We aim to:

  • Nurture, sustain and challenge people to grow spiritually and find meaning in their lives through worship, religious education, social and creative opportunities;
  • Grow together as a multi-generational, diverse and inclusive community;
  • Lead social justice, community service and outreach activities to positively transform our community.

We are a Welcoming Congregation

Unitarian Universalists believe that our first principle—respecting “the inherent worth and dignity of every person,” applies equally to people of all sexual orientations and gender identities. Recognizing that negative attitudes, deep prejudices, and profound ignorance about bisexual, gay, lesbian, and transgender persons are more prevalent in our society and even in our congregations than we would like, UUA General Assembly voted overwhelmingly in 1989 to initiate the Welcoming Congregation program to aid congregations in creating a welcoming and caring community for all people. The Unitarian Universalist Church of Rockville is a Welcoming Congregation and is strongly committed to

  • Including and addressing the needs of bisexual, gay, lesbian, and transgender persons at every level of congregational life
  • Fully incorporating the experiences of bisexual, gay, lesbian, and transgender persons throughout all programs, including religious education
  • Celebrating the lives of all people and welcoming same-sex couples, recognizing their committed relationships, and equally affirming displays of caring and affections without regard to sexual orientation
  • Seeking to nurture ongoing dialogue between bisexual, gay, lesbian, transgender, and heterosexual persons and to create deeper trust and sharing
  • Speaking out when the rights of bisexual, gay, lesbian, and transgender people are at stake, paying attention to legislative developments, and working to promote justice, freedom, and equality in the larger society
