Upcoming Events at UUCRFriday, May 9, 2008 5:30 p.m. CMR will be hosting its annual evening gala "Best of Rockville" Blue Jeans Blast at Pooks Hill Marriott in Bethesda. CMR is an advocate for the under-served and supports several programs including Chase Men's Shelter and the Mansfield Kaseman Health Clinic for the uninsured. More info here Saturday, May 10, 2008 8:15 a.m. WOFFers walk the Appalachian Trail to Harpers Ferry from Weaverton. This 3 1/2 mile trail can be done one way or both ways. (One way is of course less walking and allows more time in Harper's Ferry.) Lunch will be on the back deck of the Secret Six Tavern with its beatiful views of the Mountains, river, and lower part of town. This walk has been praised in past years for its wonderful combination of mountainous and forested scenerey along the rushing Potomac waters, its sense of history, and ease of use. The walk is basically flat except for one 15 ft high set of steps, and the group is very supportive and can offer help here. Meet at the church at 8:15am to carpool, with departure promptly at 8:30. Return should be by 4pm. Sunday, May 11, 2008 9:15 a.m. - 9:45 a.m. All are welcome to participate in UUCR's open meditation sessions, from 9:15 to 9:45am on Sundays (before church). All that's needed is an open heart and mind (and a pillow or blanket or whatever you need to make yourself comfortable on chairs or on the floor.) If you have any question about meditation sessions or meditations in general, please contact Celia Young. Sunday, May 11, 2008 10:00 a.m. Mothers Day is a good time to think
about the creative and generative
responsibilities and opportunities
throughout our lives. Liberal
theologies hold that we share with
the divine the creative energies of
the universe. We are both created
and creators. What are the
opportunities for creation in your
life? Today we will also celebrate the Bridging of our senior high graduates into the community of Young Adult UU's. Wednesday, May 14, 2008 7:30 p.m. - 9:00 p.m. The book "Unbowed" is a memoir by Wangari Muta Maathai, whose life exemplifies what one individual can do to change the world for the better in both big and small ways. The 2007 winner of the Nobel Peace Prize, Maathai first became known as the founder of the Green Belt Movement , an environmental justice campaign in Kenya, and as chairman of the National Council of Women in that country. She is currently an elected member of the Kenyan Parliament and served as Assistant Minister for Environment and Natural Resources in the government of President Mwai Kibaki between January 2003 and November 2005. Sunday, May 18, 2008 10:00 a.m. The Adult Choir will sing a rich variety of pieces from traditional to classical and from humorous to lush. Director of Music, Jennifer Rodgers Beach, will explore how some of the guidelines for good singing are often the guidelines for good living as well. It will be a morning to use all your senses!
