Film and Discussion about Torture, Aug 26, 11:45–1:00 pm. Jean Athey, founding member of Washington Region Religious Campaign Against Torture and coordinator of PeaceAction Montgomery, will show the film Outlawed, about extraordinary rendition and torture, and lead a subsequent discussion. Water Ceremony, Sunday, Sept 9, 10:00 a.m. On this day, we will celebrate our Water Ceremony, in which we all bring water either from our travels or from a sacred place in our lives, and pour it together, as we speak the name of the place where it was gathered. The ritual will be up in the front with all ages participating. It is a celebration of our return to religious community and an honoring of the earth's blessings.

What Is Al Jazeera? Sunday, Sept 9, 2:00 – 4:00 p.m. Josh Rushing, former U.S. Marine Captain and press officer at U.S. Central Command, featured in the documentary Control Room, and now a reporter for Al Jazeera English, will discuss the ideas and values that inspired his 2007 book, Mission Al Jazeera: Build a Bridge, Seek the Truth, Change the World. Question and answer time and book signing will follow. Books available for purchase. All welcome. In the Sanctuary and Fellowship Hall. Draft Canvass Budget Review Sunday, January 7, 11:30 a.m. The Finance Committee will present the newly assembled draft canvass budget. This is your chance to comment on the draft canvass budget before it is sent to the Board.

Wonderful Wednesday: "On Judaism", Wednesday, January 10, 7:30 p.m. Rev. Lynn Strauss will lead this reflection on Judaism as part of a discussion course on world religions. .

"The Rules Have Changed: It’s Not Your Father’s Financial Planning Any More" Sunday, January 14 from 11:30 to 1:00. Len Cohen, a certified financial planner, will present a financial education workshop.

Boston Dinner Saturday, January 20, 5:30 p.m. This fundraising event for the Jr. High School trip to Boston features Boston foods such as Baked Beans, Cream Pies, and Fenway Franks. If you buy in advance, tickets are only $10/adults and $5/youth, or $12/adults $7/youth at the door.

First Friday Freedom Film: "American Blackout", Friday, February 2, 7:30 p.m. American Blackout chronicles the recurring patterns of voter disenfranchisement from Florida 2000 to Ohio 2004, while following the story of Georgia Congresswoman Cynthia McKinney, who took an active role investigating these election debacles. Free.

Lunar New Year Celebration, February 10, 5:30 p.m. - 6:30 p.m. Potluck and February Birthdays celebration, 6:45 p.m. - 8:30 p.m. Performance and Program. You are invited to wear clothes from one of the Asian countries which celebrate the Lunar New Year—China, Vietnam, Korea, Japan, India—or to wear red, the traditional Lunar New Year color. You are also invited to bring food from one of these countries.

First Friday Freedom Film: "The Ground Truth: The Human Cost of War", Friday, March 2, 7:30 p.m. Garett Reppenhagen, chairman of the DC chapter of Iraq Veterans Against the War, will come to UUCR March 2 for the First Friday Freedom Film, which provides a very personal look at the effect of the U.S. occupation of Iraq on the Americans sent to enforce it. Free.

Wonderful Wednesday: "Middle East Peace: A Real Possibility", Wednesday, March 7, 7:30 p.m. Professor Ibrahim Soliman will discuss efforts aimed at bridging the gap between the United States and Syria and exploring the possibility of Syrian-Israeli peace. First Friday Freedom Film: "Sir, No Sir", Friday, April 6, 7:30 p.m. Risk, passion, and rage are the pillars of the GI antiwar movement that echo through this powerful documentary about the soldiers and veterans who worked to bring a message of peace to the public eye. Patrick McCann, a member of the Vietnam Veterans Against the War and a founder of Veterans for Peace, will lead a discussion after the film on the GI movement against the Vietnam War and what it can teach us today as we try to find our way out of Iraq. Rockville Memorial Day Parade

City of Rockville Memorial Day Parade, Monday May 28, 10 am - Noon. UUCR will participate as a musical marching unit called "UUs on Kazuus". Our theme, "The World is our Community", represents our UU principle of world community with peace and justice for all. Please join us for this fun event!

Margaret Conelley memorial service, Saturday, June 9, 3:00 pm in the Sanctuary. Margaret's family invites anyone who wants to bring a flower to make a community bouquet. There will be a reception afterwards in Davies Fellowship Hall.

Streaming Video Party of the closing worship service of the UUA General Assembly in Portland, Oregon, will be held on Sunday, June 24 at River Road Unitarian Church and Silver Spring UU Church, with a potluck at 6:00pm.

Men's Spiritual Exploration Group, Tuesday July 10, 7:30 pm. All UUCR men are welcome. Rev. Strauss will facilitate this first meeting only. Plans will be made for the Fall.
