New Year's Concert, January 1. 2:00 pm. For all ages. Please bring your leftover goodies and beverages. Led by Myra Tate (Music Director), Mary Gottlieb (Pianist), and the Choir.

Socrates Café, January 8. 7:00 to 9:00 pm.

Workshop: Beyond Categorical Thinking, January 9. 11:45 am to 2:45 pm. Led by Mr. Barb Greve, a Program Associate at the Unitarian Universalist Association (UUA), we will explore the assumptions, both explicit and hidden, that we may have about what we want in a new minister. Lunch will be provided and childcare will be available, but please sign up in advance in the lobby or by calling the church office.

Hambone lesson/demo

All-Church Potluck Dinner Dance, January 15. 5:30 to 8:00 pm. Bring a main course, side dish, or dessert to share. All-church dance from 7 to 9, with music and hambone (do you know what that is?) by the “PHD” trio, as in recent years. $10 per person; children free. Contact Allison Cox or Beth Irikura for more information.

Boston Dinner, January 29. 6:00 to 9:00 pm. Every two years the Junior High class travels to Boston for a pilgrimage. This is the fundraiser for this Spring's Boston Trip. Everyone is invited to enjoy classic New England foods: clam chowder, brown bread, baked beans, Boston cream pie, and more! Tickets cost $5 per child and $10 per adult if purchased in advance; at the door tickets will be $7 per child and $12 per adult. Members of the Junior High class are selling tickets after the service during coffee hour, or you may contact Leah Davis.

CANCELLED DUE TO WEATHER: Benefit Concert for Victims of the Tsunami Disaster, January 30. 4:00 pm in the Worship Hall. Eve Kornhauser, mezzo soprano, presents music by Handel, Schubert, Ravel, Copland, Bolcom and Hegge. With collaborating artists Gillian Cookson, pianist; Linda Eagleson, flute; and Douglas Wolters, cello. A reception follows the concert. Suggested donation is $10, or as you are able. Children over the age of six are invited as guests of the Music Program of UUCR.

Mid-Year Budget Review, January 30. After the Sunday morning service. If concrete is the flesh of our new church building, money is the blood. Please come to hear about UUCR's finances, and stay to voice your suggestions and to ask questions.

Thanksgiving in February, February 1. Dine at of of the participating restaurants in the area, who donate 10%, 15% or 20% of their receipts that day to help feed the hungry. Proceeds are distributed among hunger relief groups such as Manna and Rockville FISH. A brochure containing the list of participating restaurants is available in the lobby or at the website of Community Ministry of Montgomery County, which organizes this annual event.

Action Auction, February 5. 5:30 pm. It’s that time again—an evening to celebrate the many talents, skills, and just plain fun ideas that are a large part of our community. Please plan to come for the fun and festivities of bidding on other’s goodies, and seeing who bids on yours. The doors will open at 5:30 p.m. and childcare is available from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. for those who have signed up. Extra catalogs will be available in the lobby. You can also donate using our on-line form. The Auction was a happy success, netting over $10,000 for UUCR!

Behavioral Covenant Workshop, Sunday February 13, 11:15 am to 1:30 pm.  Facilitated by Judith Bauer, JPD Congregational Consultant.  All members and friends are strongly encouraged to attend. Lunch and child care will be provided. Click here to sign up. Sponsored by the Transitional Support Team.

Potluck & games

All-Ages Potluck, February 19. 5:30 to 8:00 pm. Dinner from 5:30 to 6:30. Bring a main course, side dish, or dessert to share. Peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, milk and water will be provided. After dinner we'll pull out the board games and puzzles; bring some from home if you'd like. Last year the adults tackled a “Who said that?” famous quotes puzzle. This year we’ll be testing our knowledge of the world with “Where in the world is that?”. Questions? Contact Allison Cox or Beth Irikura.

UUCR Fellowship Dinner, Sunday February 27, 5 - 8 PM, at River Road Unitarian Church. All members and friends are invited to this all-church event! Chidcare is available.

About Our Norms: February 6, February 20 March 13, and March 6. After the Sunday morning service. The Transition Support Team (TST) invites you to participate in three conversations about UUCR’s norms. Feb. 6: Role of the Minister; Feb. 20 Mar. 13: Decision Making, Conflict Resolution, and Leadership; Mar. 6: Money, Membership. These conversations will inform the congregation’s efforts later this spring to adopt a Behavioral Covenant. Questions? Please contact Bill Hurlbut, Fran Lowe, Marie Reed, Celia Young, or Rev. Sue.

Conversation with the Minister, March 16, 7:30 pm in the Worship Hall.

Potluck Purim Party, Saturday March 19, 5:30 p.m. Join the For All Ages Potluck as we celebrate Purim We’ll hear the Purim story, dress in costumes, make lots of noise, and eat Purim food. Please bring a dish to share. Peanut butter, jelly, bread, and milk provided. Contact Beth Irikura for more information.

Taste of Polish Easter, March 23, 7:30 pm. Led by Jobella Midonna and Mike Kerr. Food-tasting and discussion of the Christian meanings attached to Polish foods of Easter. Egg-dyeing will be done by participants. Recipes will be made available. Registration is required (lobby table or bulletin board or call the UUCR office or online).

Minister Candidate Week, Sunday April 3 through Sunday April 10. Our minister candidate, Rev. Lynn Thomas Strauss, will lead worship on Sunday, April 3 and Sunday, April 10. Two services, 9:00 a.m. and 10:45 a.m., both weeks.

Calling Rev. Strauss

Vote on calling new Minister, April 10, Noon. There will be a congregational meeting, and UUCR members will vote on whether or not to call Rev. Lynn Thomas Strauss as our new, settled minister! Rev. Strauss was overwhelmingly approved by an enthusiastic meeting of members. While the votes were being counted, we sang songs from the Folk Song book. After the vote, with the colorful UUCR banner flying, a contingent processed to Lynn’s house to ask her to accept our call. She accepted!

Stewardship Sunday, April 17, 11 AM - 2 PM. This is our day to care for our facilities and grounds by all pitching in. Bring your garden tools and wheelbarrows, and come dressed to do yardwork after our 10 AM service. There are indoor jobs, too. Lunch will be served.

Covenant of Right Relations Workshop, Sunday, April 24, 11 am to 2 pm. All Members and Friends are invited to participate in a facilitated workshop to craft our draft Covenant of Right Relations.  Potluck lunch.  Childcare provided if you reserve ahead of time.  Please notify the church office if you have not already RSVP'd.
