Adult Enrichment Programs

At UUCR several groups meet regularly. Some have a spiritual focus, some concentrate on service to UUCR, and others are more social in nature. Schedules for upcoming programs can be found in the latest issue of Quest, our congregational newsletter. A registration form is also available on-line.

Socrates Café

Socrates Café is a monthly philosophical discussion group using the Socratic method to explore life's “big questions”. Socrates Café meets on Saturday evenings, 7 - 9 PM. Registration is not required, nor is continued attendance. Open to members and nonmembers. See the Socrates Cafe page for upcoming dates.

Music Program

Our excellent adult choir practices on Thursday evening from 7:30 to 10 PM and performs several times per month. Benefit recitals and other special musical events are held occasionally.

Quilting Group

12 Days of Christmas (2004) Meets on Wednesday evenings from January through mid-November. The annual quilt project is entered in the Montgomery County Fair competition, then raffled at our annual church bazaar. The quilt shown at right, “Twelve Days of Christmas”, was made in 2004, using fabric and patterns donated by Mariana Bell Warner, who attended UUCR during the 1970s.

Craft Group

Meets on Tuesday mornings at 10:00 in the Fellowship Hall. We work on individual and/or group projects and participate in the church's annual Bazaar. Join us for coffee and conversation and bring your own craft project.

Drum Circle

The drum circle is a gathering where people come to express themselves together through rhythm. It can be just a few people or a large number. The drummers, who may have a wide range of skills, sit in a circle and play rhythms on drums and other percussion instruments. The circle is a jam session in which rhythms are improvised, and the music is created in the moment through co-operation and collaboration. A facilitator helps the group establish and guide rhythms. Sharing their spirit in the form of rhythm, the drummers seek a "groove" where everyone is attuned, and one powerful musical voice is created out of the many, when "the energy flows, time stops and we all evaporate."

The circle meets in Founders Hall the third Sunday of the month, from 7:00-8:30 PM. Everyone is welcome. Drums and other instruments are available. Contact: Steve Einhorn, 202-530-4527

Book Discussion Groups

There is an evening book group and a daytime group; each meets monthly. Each group selects eclectically from among fiction or non-fiction, classics or best-sellers, usually titles available at the public library. Newcomers are welcome!

Writers Circle

Group meets on Monday evenings and Wednesday mornings to provide an avenue for writers to share and grow together.

Lunch Bunch

A social group that meets once a month, each time at a different local restaurant.

WOFFers

“Walking Outdoors for Fun and Friendship.” This walking/hiking group meets every other Saturday morning in fall, early winter and spring and walks or hikes in different locations. Usually the group meets up at UUCR at 8:15 AM and carpools to the hike location.

Meditation

Half hour of Silent Meditation in Room 44 on Sunday from 9:15 AM to 9:45 AM (before 10 AM worship service)

All are welcome to participate in UUCR's open meditation sessions. All that's needed is an open heart and mind (and a pillow or blanket or whatever you need to make yourself comfortable on chairs or on the floor.) If you have any question about meditation sessions or meditations in general, please contact Celia Young .
